Melasma on the Upper Lip: What to Know

The skin above the lip is exposed to sunlight and visible light, and it may also experience rubbing, waxing, threading, shaving, or irritation from saliva and cosmetics. In melasma, pigment can become more noticeable in this area as part of a broader facial pattern. A flat patch does not establish the diagnosis on its own.

A clinician checks whether the colour is symmetrical, whether the surface is smooth, and whether there was preceding inflammation. Sun-damaged skin, contact irritation, and other causes of dark patches can overlap in appearance, so the treatment plan should follow an examination rather than the location alone.

Apply sunscreen carefully to the skin above the lip and use shade or a hat when outdoors. Keep hair-removal methods gentle; pause a method that repeatedly causes redness or stinging. Avoid applying strong acids, scrubs, or fragranced products to freshly waxed or irritated skin, and let the barrier settle before restarting routine care.

Record changes in consistent lighting rather than judging the area immediately after hair removal or a procedure.
