Short answer

Melasma control relies on consistent light protection, gentle skincare and a treatment plan matched to your skin.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What melasma control means

Melasma causes brown or grey-brown patches, often on the cheeks, forehead, nose, upper lip or jawline. It can become more noticeable after sunlight or other light exposure, and hormonal changes may also influence it. Control means reducing triggers, preventing darkening and gradually improving uneven colour; it does not always mean that every patch disappears.

A flare can follow irritation, heat or a tanning episode. Scrubbing, picking and using several strong products at once may inflame the skin and make discolouration harder to settle. A dermatologist can confirm whether the pattern fits melasma or another cause of dark patches.

Steps that support control

Use broad-spectrum sunscreen every day and reapply when you are outdoors, sweating or swimming. A hat, shade and avoiding intense midday sun add useful protection. Visible light can also matter for some people, so ask whether a tinted product is suitable for your skin.

Keep cleansing, moisturising and treatment application gentle. Introduce one active product at a time, stop products that sting or cause persistent redness, and avoid unprescribed steroid or bleaching mixtures. Prescription creams may be used for a defined course; follow the clinician's directions and mention pregnancy, breastfeeding or plans to conceive before treatment.

If topical care is not enough, a dermatologist may discuss a supervised chemical peel, microneedling, skin brightening treatment or laser toning. These procedures can irritate pigment-prone skin, so diagnosis, conservative settings and aftercare matter.

When to seek care

Arrange a dermatology review if the patches are new, changing, one-sided, itchy, painful, scaly or bleeding, or if the diagnosis is uncertain. Seek prompt care for rapid change, an open sore or a dark spot with an irregular border. Book an assessment if self-care is causing burning or if the colour is affecting your wellbeing; a clinician can check for another condition and create a safer plan.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Does this look like melasma or another pigmentation problem? Which sunscreen and active ingredients suit my skin? How long should I try the plan before review? Could heat, hormones or a current medicine be contributing? Would a procedure be appropriate, and what irritation or darkening should I watch for afterward?

Questions people ask

Can melasma return after it fades?

Yes. Sunlight, visible light, heat, irritation and hormonal changes can make pigment more noticeable again, so ongoing protection and a maintenance plan may help.

Should I exfoliate melasma?

Strong scrubs and frequent acids can irritate pigment-prone skin. Use only a clinician-approved exfoliating product and stop if it burns or causes lasting redness.

Are clinic procedures suitable for everyone with melasma?

No. Procedures need individual assessment because irritation can worsen pigmentation. A dermatologist can choose whether a peel, microneedling, skin brightening treatment or laser toning is appropriate.
