Melasma and Pigmentation: What to Know

How the structures involved in Melasma differ from normal

Short answer

Melasma is a light-sensitive pigment condition, so diagnosis, daily protection and a gradual treatment plan are central to care.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical appearance
Flat brown or grey-brown patches.
Daily priority
Limit light exposure and skin irritation.
Treatment pace
Changes are assessed gradually.

Understanding the colour change

Melasma produces flat brown, grey-brown or tan patches, commonly across the cheeks, forehead, nose or upper lip. Sunlight and visible light can stimulate pigment, while hormonal changes, heat and irritation may also influence it. Pigmentation is a broad term: Dark Patches On Skin and Uneven Skin Tone can have many causes, including inflammation, medicines or sun damage. A clinician examines the pattern and history before labelling it melasma.

A practical care plan

Use a gentle cleanser, moisturiser and broad-spectrum sunscreen every day; add shade, sunglasses or a hat when outdoors. Avoid picking spots and introduce exfoliating or brightening products only as directed, because irritation can make colour more visible. Treatment may involve a Skin Brightening Treatment, Chemical Peel, Microneedling or Laser Toning, depending on the depth, activity and sensitivity of the pigment. Improvement is usually gradual, and maintenance may be needed.

Take clear photographs in consistent lighting so you and your clinician can notice true change rather than day-to-day variation. Mention pregnancy, breastfeeding, hormonal medicines and any new skincare when discussing options.

When a mark needs assessment

Book a skin review if a patch changes quickly, becomes raised, bleeds, crusts, forms a sore or differs sharply from your other areas of pigmentation. Seek prompt care for painful swelling, pus or rapidly spreading redness after a procedure. These signs are not typical reasons to keep exfoliating at home.

Questions for your doctor

What supports the diagnosis of melasma in my case? Which light-protection measures and products fit my skin? What is the gentlest treatment option, and how will we respond if the pigment darkens?

Questions people ask

Is every dark patch melasma?

No. Dark patches can follow inflammation, reflect sun damage or have other causes, so a changing mark should be examined.

Can melasma come back after treatment?

Yes. Ongoing light exposure and other triggers can reactivate pigment, making maintenance and protection part of the plan.
