Melanonychia treatment: what should you know?

Melanonychia is a visible sign rather than one single disease. The same dark band can have different explanations, so treatment begins with a nail and skin examination. The clinician may ask about injuries, repeated friction, medicines, other nails, and changes since the band appeared. A regular, stable pattern may only need planned review. An unexplained or evolving pattern can require a closer look at the nail-producing tissue.

Bring photographs showing the band at earlier points, details of nail trauma, and a complete medicine list. Keep the nail clean and avoid cutting the cuticle, scraping the surface, or using products marketed to erase pigment. If treatment involves a procedure, the clinician will explain the area examined, wound care, and how nail growth may affect the final appearance. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without discussing it with the prescriber.

Arrange medical review for a band that changes in width or colour, has irregular edges, reaches the surrounding skin, or is linked with nail splitting, lifting, bleeding, pain, or tissue loss. Prompt examination is particularly sensible when the change is new in one nail and has no clear cause. The purpose is to identify the explanation early, not to assume what the band represents.
