Melanonychia striata treatment: what should you know?

Melanonychia striata describes a lengthwise pigmented stripe. A clinician considers whether it affects one or several nails, whether the colour is even, how wide the stripe is, and whether pigment reaches the surrounding skin. The assessment also includes trauma, medicines, skin tone, age, and other nail changes. A stable pattern may be photographed and monitored, while an unexplained changing pattern may need closer evaluation.

Do not try to remove the stripe with polish remover, filing, acid, or bleaching products. Keep the nail trimmed without cutting into the sides, protect it from pressure, and bring a list of medicines and a timeline of changes to the appointment. If a suspected trigger is found, the clinician may address that trigger. If the nail origin needs examination, a targeted procedure can provide tissue for assessment and may alter the nail temporarily.

Seek dermatology advice for a stripe that is newly appearing, broadening, darker at one side, irregular, or extending onto nearby skin. Pain, bleeding, nail destruction, or a persistent mark after an apparent injury also warrants assessment. Urgency is based on these warning features, not on the existence of a stripe alone.

Ask whether the pattern can be monitored, what change would alter the plan, whether any medicine or trauma is relevant, and what a nail procedure would examine. Ask about dressings, activity, and expected nail growth if sampling is recommended.
