What should you know about melanoma merkel cell carcinoma?

Melanoma develops from pigment-producing melanocytes. Merkel cell carcinoma develops from specialised cells in the skin and may appear as a firm, shiny or quickly growing lump, often on sun-exposed skin. Their appearance can overlap with harmless growths and other skin cancers, so the label cannot be confirmed by sight alone.

A pathology report examines cells from a biopsy. Doctors then assess the nearby lymph nodes and other areas when needed to understand whether the cancer is local or has spread. This information shapes the treatment conversation and follow-up schedule.

Ask for a coordinated review with a dermatologist, surgeon or oncology team. Bring the pathology report and ask whether lymph-node assessment or scans are appropriate.
