What should you know about melanoma and itchy skin?

Most people with itchy skin have causes such as dryness, irritation, eczema, allergy, infection, or inflammation. Melanoma may present with an itchy, bleeding, crusted, or changing mole, yet the symptom is not specific. Pay attention to a spot that keeps itching, changes in colour or shape, develops an uneven border, or fails to heal. Widespread itching without a changing pigmented lesion may fit atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, psoriasis, hives, scabies, or a yeast infection.

Arrange a skin examination if itching is centred on a mole or mark, lasts despite gentle skin care, or comes with bleeding or crusting. Use a fragrance-free moisturiser, avoid scratching, and pause newly introduced soaps or cosmetics if they trigger symptoms. Note where the itch occurs, when it started, and what worsens it; these details help separate irritation, infection, infestation, and a lesion needing biopsy.

Seek prompt care for a changing pigmented spot, repeated bleeding, a non-healing sore, rapidly spreading rash, facial swelling, or signs of infection. Get urgent help if itching comes with throat swelling, wheezing, faintness, or widespread blistering. These signs do not prove melanoma, but they require timely assessment.

Ask whether the itch is coming from a specific lesion, whether a skin sample is needed, which conditions are being considered, and which changes should lead you to return sooner.
