The display gives an estimate, not a direct measurement of oxygen in the bloodstream. Cold fingers, movement, poor circulation, nail coverings, and an incorrectly positioned sensor can make the result unreliable. Look at the number alongside breathing, skin colour, alertness, and how you feel rather than treating one isolated reading as a diagnosis.

Sit quietly, warm your hand, remove nail coverings if needed, and place the sensor as directed. Keep the hand still until the display settles, then record the reading and the time if you are monitoring an illness. Use the same device and site when comparing readings, and follow any personalised target given by your clinician.

Get urgent help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, collapse, or rapidly worsening symptoms.
