Mediterranean fever: what to know

Short answer
Mediterranean fever is not a diagnosis by itself; fever can accompany infections such as brucellosis, respiratory illnesses or other conditions and needs context.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance

- Record
- Onset, temperature pattern, exposures and accompanying symptoms
What fever can indicate
Fever is a rise in body temperature that commonly occurs when the immune system responds to infection. The pattern, associated symptoms, travel or animal exposure, medicines and existing health conditions help a clinician narrow the possibilities. Cough, wheezing or a hoarse cough may point toward a respiratory illness, while skin redness and tenderness can suggest cellulitis. A fever alone cannot identify its cause.
What you can do
Rest, drink fluids if you can, and wear light clothing. Check your temperature using the same method each time and note when symptoms began. Use fever medicine only as directed on its label or by a clinician, especially if you are pregnant, have liver or kidney disease, or take other medicines. Do not use leftover antibiotics. Arrange a medical review when fever persists, returns, or is accompanied by worsening symptoms.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, severe drowsiness, confusion, a stiff neck, a seizure, blue lips, a rapidly spreading rash, or signs of dehydration. Infants, older adults, pregnant people and those with weakened immunity may need earlier assessment. Fever after travel, contact with livestock or unpasteurised dairy should be mentioned promptly because it changes the questions and tests a clinician may consider.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what cause is most consistent with your symptoms, whether an examination or testing is needed, which fever medicine is suitable, and what changes should trigger urgent review.

Questions people ask
Is Mediterranean fever always brucellosis?
No. Fever has many possible causes, and brucellosis is considered only when the history and examination fit.
Should I take antibiotics for fever?
Only when prescribed for a suspected or confirmed bacterial infection; antibiotics do not treat viral illnesses.
