Testing usually involves breathing through a disposable or cleaned mouthpiece connected to the device. The operator demonstrates the manoeuvre, then asks you to breathe in deeply and blow out firmly for as long as instructed. The recording may include the amount exhaled and the pattern of airflow. These measurements can support assessment of obstructive or restrictive breathing patterns, but the device cannot explain every cause of breathlessness. Interpretation depends on your age, height, symptoms, examination and the quality of your effort.

Bring a list of medicines and mention inhalers, recent infections, chest discomfort or previous lung diagnoses. Wear loose clothing and avoid a heavy meal immediately before testing if your clinic advises this. Do not stop prescribed medicine unless the clinician gives you a clear plan. Sit or stand as directed, keep your lips sealed around the mouthpiece, and repeat the effort when asked. Pause if you feel light-headed or develop chest pain, then tell the operator exactly what happened.

Arrange medical assessment for breathlessness that is new, worsening or limiting ordinary activity, or for a cough that persists. Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, confusion, blue or grey lips, or sudden chest pain. If you are too unwell to produce a reliable forceful breath, call the clinic before attending so the test can be timed safely.

Ask what the Medisoft device is measuring, whether your usual inhalers should be taken before the appointment, how the operator will judge test quality, and when your results will be reviewed. Ask what further assessment is appropriate if your symptoms continue despite a reassuring reading.
