Medicine to stop an itchy throat

An itchy throat often accompanies nasal allergy or a common cold, especially when there is sneezing, a runny nose or cough. House dust mite exposure can cause repeated symptoms indoors. Food allergy is a different concern when itching begins soon after eating and is joined by hives, lip swelling, vomiting or breathing difficulty. The symptom alone does not identify its cause.

Drink water, try a warm drink, and keep away from smoke, strong scents and dusty air. A lozenge can provide short-term soothing for adults when used according to its directions. If an allergy pattern is present, a pharmacist may recommend an antihistamine or another allergy medicine after checking your medical history and other medicines. Avoid foods that have triggered symptoms and seek advice before testing them again. Antibiotics are not useful for most viral or allergic causes.

Seek emergency help for throat or tongue swelling, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness or difficulty swallowing, particularly after eating or taking medicine. Arrange a clinical review for worsening symptoms, fever, severe pain, repeated episodes or difficulty drinking. Recurrent symptoms may need assessment for allergy triggers or another throat problem.

Explain the timing, possible triggers and any nasal, skin or stomach symptoms. Ask which medicine is suitable with your existing treatment, whether you should avoid a specific allergen, and whether an emergency allergy plan is needed.
