Medicine to lower blood pressure: what to know

Blood-pressure medicines work in different ways: some relax blood vessels, some reduce the amount of salt and fluid retained by the body, and others slow the heart or alter hormone signals. A clinician chooses based on your readings, age, kidney function, other conditions, pregnancy plans, and medicines. Hypertension often causes no noticeable symptoms, so feeling well does not show that treatment is unnecessary. Monitoring may include home readings or ambulatory blood pressure monitoring.

Take the medicine at the prescribed time and do not stop suddenly without advice. If you miss a dose, follow the leaflet rather than doubling the next one. Keep a record of readings and report dizziness, ankle swelling, persistent cough, unusual tiredness, or changes in urination. Ask before using anti-inflammatory painkillers, decongestants, or supplements because they can affect blood pressure or interact with treatment. Lifestyle measures such as less salty food, regular activity, and avoiding tobacco support the plan.

Call emergency services for sudden weakness or numbness on one side, difficulty speaking, new vision loss, severe chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, or a sudden severe headache. These may indicate stroke, a transient ischaemic attack, angina, or another urgent problem. Seek prompt advice for repeated very low readings with faintness or for swelling of the face, lips, or tongue.
