Ringworm can affect the groin and nearby external skin, causing itch, redness, a scaly edge, or a rash that extends onto the inner thighs. Irritation, yeast infection, contact dermatitis, and some sexually transmitted infections can produce similar symptoms. A clinician may need to inspect the area and ask about discharge, sores, urinary symptoms, or recent exposures.

A topical antifungal may be suitable when the diagnosis is clear and the rash is limited to external skin. Do not put a product inside the vagina, penis opening, anus, or other internal tissue unless its instructions specifically allow that use. Oral antifungal treatment is sometimes considered for extensive or persistent infection, but it requires a medication review.

Use only a product labelled for the affected external area and follow its directions exactly. Wash gently, pat dry, wear loose breathable underwear, and change after sweating. Keep separate towels and avoid sharing clothing. Pause fragranced washes, deodorants, and shaving products that sting or inflame the skin.

Do not combine an antifungal with a steroid cream unless a clinician directs you to do so. Avoid sexual contact if friction worsens pain or if sores or an undiagnosed rash are present. If a partner has symptoms, they should obtain their own assessment rather than using your medicine.

Seek medical advice when symptoms involve internal tissue, discharge, blisters, ulcers, marked swelling, bleeding, pain with urination, or pelvic or testicular pain. Arrange review if the rash spreads, returns, or does not improve with appropriate treatment. Prompt care is needed for fever, rapidly worsening redness, severe pain, or facial swelling or breathing difficulty after using a product.

Ask whether this is ringworm, yeast, irritation, or another condition; where the medicine can be applied; and how long to use it. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, sexual exposures, and all medicines or supplements, especially before oral treatment.
