Medicine for ringworm in humans

Ringworm is a fungal infection, despite its name, and it can cause an expanding rash with a clearer centre, itch, or surface scale. A clinician may examine the border and scale because eczema and other rashes can look similar. Treatment aims to clear the fungus from the affected skin; the appearance may settle gradually after the infection is controlled.

A topical antifungal is commonly considered for a limited area of skin. Oral antifungal treatment may be selected when the affected area is extensive, involves hair-bearing skin, returns repeatedly, or has not responded as expected. The correct medicine depends on the body site, age, other conditions, and medicines already being taken.

Follow the product directions or prescription, and apply topical medicine to the affected skin and the surrounding margin as directed. Keep the area clean and dry, wash hands after application, and do not share towels, clothing, hairbrushes, or sports equipment. Change damp clothing promptly and wash items that touch the rash regularly.

Avoid using a steroid cream on a suspected fungal rash unless a clinician has specifically advised it; steroids can alter the appearance and allow fungus to spread. Do not stop a prescribed course just because itching improves. If the rash is on the scalp, nails, face, or genital skin, arrange an assessment because treatment may differ.

Arrange medical advice if the rash is spreading, painful, oozing, severely inflamed, or not improving with correctly used treatment. Seek prompt assessment for involvement of the scalp, eyes, nails, or a large area, and for a child, pregnancy, a weakened immune system, or a condition that makes skin infections harder to manage. Urgent care is appropriate for facial swelling, breathing trouble, fever with rapidly worsening skin, or severe pain.

Ask whether the appearance fits ringworm, which formulation and duration suit the site, whether household contacts or pets should be checked, and what improvement should look like. Mention pregnancy, liver problems, allergies, and every medicine or supplement you use before starting oral treatment.
