Medicine for nausea in adults: what to know

Nausea is the feeling that you may vomit. A medicine may reduce that feeling, but it may not treat the reason it started. Stomach infection, food poisoning, reflux, migraine, medicine side effects, pregnancy, dehydration, heat exhaustion, and low blood sugar can all need different care. Nausea can also occur with gallstones, gastritis, or hepatitis A; the symptom alone does not identify one condition.

Some products are intended for motion-related nausea, while others are selected by a clinician for nausea linked to illness or treatment. Products that cause drowsiness can affect driving and coordination. Combining products with alcohol, sedatives, or another medicine that causes sleepiness can increase this effect. Read active ingredients carefully so you do not take the same ingredient twice.

Take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink, especially if vomiting has occurred. Choose plain foods such as toast, rice, bananas, or soup when you can tolerate them, and avoid large, greasy meals. Fresh air and resting upright may help; avoid lying flat soon after eating if reflux seems involved.

Before using an over-the-counter nausea product, ask a pharmacist to check your age, allergies, pregnancy possibility, kidney or liver problems, glaucoma, prostate symptoms, and current medicines. Follow the package directions and do not use another person’s prescription. If nausea began after a new medicine, do not stop an essential treatment without speaking with the prescriber.

Get urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, chest pain, confusion, fainting, a severe headache, a stiff neck, blood or coffee-ground material in vomit, green vomit, or signs of serious dehydration such as very little urine and marked weakness. Seek prompt advice if you cannot keep fluids down, nausea follows a head injury, or you may have taken a harmful substance.

Arrange a medical review when nausea keeps returning, lasts longer than expected, comes with fever or yellowing of the eyes, or is associated with weight loss or difficulty swallowing. A clinician can look for the cause and decide whether an anti-nausea prescription, tests, or treatment for another condition is appropriate.
