Medicine for dizziness in travel

A pharmacist or clinician can help you choose an option after asking about your age, other medicines, pregnancy, and medical conditions. Some travel-sickness medicines can cause sleepiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, or difficulty concentrating, so check the label before driving or drinking alcohol.

On a moving car, boat, or aircraft, the eyes and inner ear may send different movement signals to the brain. This mismatch can cause dizziness, nausea, sweating, headache, or vomiting. Heat, crowded spaces, worry, missed meals, and not drinking enough can add to the feeling.

Dizziness is not always travel sickness. Persistent or recurrent symptoms may need assessment for problems such as dehydration, anaemia, iron deficiency anaemia, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, or an irregular heart rhythm such as atrial fibrillation.

Take any recommended travel-sickness medicine at the time stated on its label; some work better when taken before movement begins. Sit where movement is less noticeable, keep your eyes on a stable distant point, and get fresh air if it is safe. Avoid reading or looking at a screen while the vehicle is moving.

Sip water, eat light regular meals, and avoid alcohol. Move slowly when standing, particularly after a long journey. If vomiting continues, replace fluids gradually and seek advice about signs of dehydration.

Seek urgent help for dizziness with chest pain, fainting, severe breathlessness, new weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking, a severe sudden headache, or confusion. Get prompt medical advice if you cannot keep fluids down, have signs of dehydration, or the symptom continues after travel or repeatedly returns.

Travel-related dizziness with marked heat exposure, shakiness, sweating, or unusual drowsiness also deserves prompt attention because heat exhaustion or low blood sugar may need treatment.

Ask which medicine fits your symptoms, when to take it, and whether it may affect alertness. Tell them about regular medicines, allergies, pregnancy, glaucoma, prostate symptoms, heart problems, and previous reactions to travel-sickness treatments.
