Medicine for dizziness and vomiting

Dizziness can mean spinning, imbalance or feeling faint. Vomiting can then worsen fluid loss and make lightheadedness stronger. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo often causes brief spinning with particular head movements, whereas dehydration, Heat Exhaustion, low blood sugar, anaemia, anxiety or an abnormal heart rhythm can produce other patterns.

Anti-sickness or anti-vertigo medicines may be appropriate for some people, but they can cause drowsiness and may mask a worsening problem. A clinician needs the timing, triggers, associated symptoms and medication history before recommending treatment.

Sit or lie somewhere safe, move slowly, and avoid driving, ladders and alcohol while symptoms continue. Take small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink; pause briefly if vomiting returns, then restart with smaller sips. If you have diabetes, check your glucose according to your care plan and treat a low reading as advised.

Do not take another person’s prescription medicine. A pharmacist can check whether an over-the-counter product is safe with your medicines, pregnancy status, glaucoma, prostate problems or breathing conditions.

Call emergency services for new weakness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe headache, chest pain, fainting, severe breathing difficulty, confusion or inability to walk safely. Seek prompt assessment for repeated vomiting, severe dehydration, a new irregular heartbeat, fever with neck stiffness, or dizziness after a head injury.
