Medicine for a cold and itchy throat

A viral common cold can irritate the lining of the nose and throat, causing tickling, soreness, mucus and coughing. Allergic rhinitis can produce an itchy throat with sneezing, a runny nose or itchy eyes, especially after exposure to pollen, dust or animals. A food allergy may cause throat itching soon after eating and needs urgent attention if swelling or breathing trouble occurs.

Medicine eases symptoms but does not treat every possible cause. Antibiotics do not help a typical viral cold. Persistent or repeated symptoms may fit an allergy pattern and deserve a clinical review.

Sip water or warm drinks, use honey in a warm drink if suitable for you, and avoid cigarette smoke and other throat irritants. Saline nasal rinses may reduce mucus dripping towards the throat. A pharmacist can help you choose a lozenge, pain reliever or cough product and check for interactions, pregnancy precautions, asthma, high blood pressure or other conditions.

If allergy symptoms are prominent, an antihistamine or another allergy treatment may be more useful than a cold combination product. Follow the label, avoid doubling ingredients across products, and stop a medicine that causes a concerning reaction.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, blue lips, or rapidly worsening symptoms after food or medicine. Arrange medical assessment for severe difficulty swallowing, dehydration, chest pain, a high or persistent fever, coughing blood, or symptoms that are worsening instead of improving. Recurrent throat irritation may need assessment for Allergic Rhinitis or another cause.
