Medication Repeat Prescription: What You Should Know

A repeat prescription is intended for a medicine that has already been assessed and is being used for an ongoing health need. It does not mean that every future supply is automatically appropriate. Your clinician may set instructions about the dose, timing, quantity, number of repeats, or date for a review. The pharmacy may also need to confirm the prescription details before supplying the medicine.

Some medicines need regular checks because the condition, your symptoms, or the medicine’s effects can change. A review may include discussing how well the treatment is working, unwanted effects, other medicines, allergies, pregnancy plans, or changes in your health.

Request the repeat before your current supply runs out, using the process offered by your clinic or pharmacy. Have the medicine name, strength, directions, and remaining supply available. Check the dispensed medicine against your usual instructions and ask the pharmacist about anything that looks different.

Take the medicine exactly as directed unless a clinician advises a change. Do not share it, double a missed dose without advice, or stop a long-term medicine suddenly when withdrawal or rebound symptoms are possible. Tell the prescriber or pharmacist about new medicines, supplements, side effects, or difficulty taking the treatment.

Contact a clinician promptly if your symptoms are worsening, the medicine is not helping, or you develop a new or troublesome reaction after taking it. Seek urgent help for signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the lips or tongue, trouble breathing, faintness, or rapidly spreading hives.

If you have missed doses because you cannot obtain a repeat, contact the clinic or pharmacist for advice rather than changing the schedule yourself. A GP consultation can help assess your symptoms, medicines, and need for continued treatment.

Ask how long you are expected to continue the medicine, what monitoring or review is needed, what to do if you miss a dose, and which symptoms should prompt urgent advice. You can also ask whether another medicine, dose, or formulation would be appropriate if side effects or practical difficulties are affecting your use.
