What should you know about medicated talc for sweat rash?

Heat rash develops when sweat is trapped in blocked ducts, often in warm, humid conditions or beneath tight clothing. Small bumps, redness, prickling and itch can follow. A drying powder may help keep skin folds less damp, yet powders can irritate broken skin and should not be inhaled. Redness or bumps can also reflect contact dermatitis, a fungal problem or another rash, so the product label alone cannot confirm the cause.

Move to a cooler environment, wash gently, pat dry and wear loose, breathable clothing. Apply only a light amount of a product labelled for the affected skin and keep it away from the nose and mouth. Do not use powder on raw, oozing or infected-looking skin without medical advice. An emollient can help if the skin barrier is dry, while a topical corticosteroid may be considered by a clinician for significant inflammation.

Seek medical advice if the rash becomes painful, warm, swollen, crusted or draining, or if it persists after cooling and gentle care. Urgent help is needed for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, fever with a rapidly spreading rash, or a severe reaction after applying powder.
