What is the medical term for an itchy throat?

An itchy throat is an irritating or tickling sensation in the throat. Allergic rhinitis can cause it alongside sneezing, a runny nose, or itchy eyes. A common cold may bring throat irritation with congestion, cough, or feeling unwell. Food allergy can cause mouth or throat itching soon after eating a trigger food, while house dust mite allergy may cause recurring symptoms indoors. Dry air, smoke, strong scents, and voice strain can irritate the throat without an infection.

Drink fluids, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and use a humidified environment if dry air is aggravating the sensation. Do not deliberately retry a food that has caused throat itching until a clinician has assessed the reaction.
