What should you know about medical medium hives?

Hives, also called urticaria, are raised patches or welts that can be pink, red, or close to your skin tone. They may itch, sting, change shape, or appear in different places as individual welts fade. A hive often settles within a day, although new ones can continue to appear.

Triggers include infections, medicines, foods, heat, pressure, exercise, or contact exposures, but a clear trigger is not always found. Deeper swelling, called Angioedema, can affect the lips, eyelids, hands, feet, or throat and may occur with or without visible hives.

Note when the welts began, what changed beforehand, where they occur, and whether you have taken a new medicine or food. Keep the skin cool, avoid scratching and tight clothing, and use only treatments recommended for you. A clinician may discuss Antihistamine Treatment; stronger medicines are sometimes considered for selected severe flares.

Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice, but report a suspected reaction promptly. Repeated episodes, symptoms lasting beyond a brief flare, or swelling without an obvious trigger deserve medical review.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, throat tightness, a hoarse voice, wheezing, faintness, or swelling of the tongue or mouth. Get urgent advice for rapidly spreading Skin Swelling, vomiting with hives, or feeling suddenly unwell. A rash that is painful, bruised, blistered, or accompanied by fever needs assessment because it may not be ordinary hives.
