Meclizine for motion sickness

Motion sickness occurs when the brain receives mismatched information from the eyes, inner ears and body. Meclizine reduces some of the balance-system signalling that contributes to nausea, vomiting and dizziness. It works best when taken according to the product instructions before travel; taking it only after symptoms are severe may be less helpful. Sleepiness, dry mouth and blurred vision are possible effects.

Check the label or ask a pharmacist about timing, especially for a child, older adult, pregnancy, glaucoma, breathing problems or difficulty passing urine. Sit where movement is gentler, look toward the horizon, keep fresh air moving, and avoid reading while the vehicle is in motion. Sip fluids and avoid alcohol. Do not combine it with other sedating medicines unless a clinician has advised you.

Seek medical advice if nausea or vomiting continues after travel, happens without motion, or repeatedly disrupts journeys despite sensible prevention. Get urgent help for fainting, confusion, severe headache, chest pain, trouble breathing, severe abdominal pain, or inability to keep fluids down. Symptoms that persist may reflect another problem rather than motion sickness alone.
