Meclizine for pregnancy nausea

Meclizine is an antihistamine that can reduce signals involved in nausea, especially when the inner ear contributes to the sensation. It can cause drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision or reduced alertness. Pregnancy changes, other medicines, and health conditions can affect whether it is appropriate. It also treats symptoms rather than the underlying reason for sickness; nausea can accompany reflux, gastritis, gastroenteritis, food poisoning or other conditions.

Speak with your obstetric clinician, midwife or pharmacist before taking meclizine, particularly if you have glaucoma, breathing problems, difficulty passing urine, or take sedating medicines. Follow the product directions or prescription and do not take extra doses when symptoms persist. Small, frequent sips of fluid and plain foods may be easier to tolerate. Avoid driving or alcohol if it makes you sleepy, and keep track of how often you vomit and whether you can keep fluids down.

Arrange prompt medical advice if vomiting prevents fluids or prescribed medicines from staying down, urine becomes very dark or infrequent, you feel faint, or symptoms are worsening. Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit, confusion, trouble breathing, or a severe headache. Pregnancy-related nausea can sometimes lead to dehydration and needs assessment even when meclizine reduces the sensation.
