What should you know about meclizine for nausea?

Nausea can accompany acid reflux, food poisoning, gallstones, gastritis, gastroenteritis, heat exhaustion, hepatitis A or hypoglycaemia. Meclizine may be useful when nausea is linked to motion or balance signals, but it may not be the right choice for every cause. It can cause drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision or reduced alertness. A medicine that quiets nausea can also make it harder to judge whether an underlying illness is worsening.

Follow the label or prescriber's directions and do not take extra doses because nausea continues. Avoid alcohol and check with a pharmacist before combining it with sleeping tablets, sedating antihistamines or other medicines that cause drowsiness. Sip clear fluids, rest, and try small bland meals when tolerated. If vomiting continues, track how often it happens and whether urine becomes dark or less frequent.

Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, blood or coffee-ground material in vomit, confusion, fainting, severe headache, chest pain, breathing difficulty or signs of serious dehydration. Prompt assessment is also needed when nausea follows a head injury, occurs with yellow skin or eyes, or prevents fluids from staying down. People with diabetes should treat suspected hypoglycaemia according to their care plan and seek help if it does not improve.
