Which virus causes measles?

Measles virus infects the airways and can then cause a whole-body illness. Fever, cough, runny nose, sore or watery eyes, and later a widespread rash are recognised features. Swollen glands may occur too, although symptoms vary and can resemble other viral infections.

The virus can pass between people when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes. Someone may spread it before the rash is obvious. A vaccination history and exposure information help a clinician judge whether measles is plausible.

Stay home and avoid close contact while arranging advice. Phone a GP before visiting, describe the fever and other symptoms, and mention any contact with a suspected case. This lets the service plan an assessment that protects other patients.

Rest and take fluids in small, frequent amounts if needed. Use age-appropriate fever relief only when suitable for the person’s medical history, and avoid sharing household items. Check immunisation records and ask about MMR vaccination; a clinician can advise on vaccination or contact measures based on the circumstances.

Get urgent help for difficult breathing, blue or grey lips, confusion, a seizure, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, or signs of dehydration. Explain that measles may be involved before travelling to a healthcare setting. Seek prompt advice for an infant, pregnancy, or reduced immunity even if symptoms seem mild.
