Why the measles vaccine has a second dose

A first dose gives the immune system an opportunity to recognise measles. A later dose gives additional opportunity for protection and helps address normal differences in how people respond. The second appointment is usually part of MMR vaccination. Its timing depends on the local schedule, the person’s age, previous records, and any special advice after travel or exposure.

Contact a vaccination clinic and bring the available record. Do not assume that the first dose must be repeated or that an old appointment is no longer relevant. A clinician can check the interval, confirm whether another dose is indicated, and consider immune conditions, pregnancy, previous reactions, and current health. Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, major facial swelling, collapse, or a rapidly worsening reaction after vaccination.
