What should you know about measles sickness?

Measles often starts with fever and cold-like symptoms before a rash becomes noticeable. The rash may begin on the face or hairline and move down the body. Some people also develop sore or watery eyes and small spots inside the mouth. A person can spread the virus before the rash appears, so recent contact with others matters when symptoms are assessed.

Symptoms overlap with other infections, and a rash alone cannot confirm measles. A healthcare professional may use the symptom pattern, vaccination history and exposure history to decide what assessment or testing is needed. Do not attend a waiting room without first explaining that measles is possible.

Call a GP or public health service before travelling to a clinic. Keep the unwell person away from school, work, crowded indoor places and people who may be vulnerable until a clinician gives specific advice. Encourage fluids and rest, and use only medicines suitable for the person's age and health.

Get urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, confusion, a seizure, severe dehydration, marked drowsiness or a rapidly worsening condition.
