What should you know about measles shot age?

The measles vaccine is commonly given as part of the combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine. The appropriate timing can differ for routine childhood vaccination, catch-up vaccination, travel, an outbreak or a person with a weakened immune system. A recorded dose may affect whether another dose is needed, so bring any vaccination card or clinic record.

Age alone does not show whether someone is protected. A clinician checks documented doses, the interval between them, previous reactions, pregnancy status when relevant and medical conditions that may change the plan. The vaccine prevents measles; it does not treat an active infection.

Gather your immunisation records and write down any past vaccine reactions, allergies, regular medicines and recent illness. Ask a GP or vaccination service to review missing or uncertain records rather than guessing. If measles exposure has occurred, mention when and where it happened before attending a clinic, because infection-control advice may be needed.
