Short answer

Measles and rubella can cause fever and a spreading rash, but their patterns differ and need clinical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the symptoms can mean

Measles often begins with fever, cough, a runny nose and irritated, watery eyes before a rash appears. The rash commonly starts on the face or hairline and moves down the body. Rubella may cause a finer rash, mild fever and swollen glands, especially behind the ears or around the neck. Symptoms can overlap with other viral illnesses, so a rash alone cannot identify the cause. A person can spread measles before the rash is obvious.

What to do if symptoms appear

Stay away from school, work and crowded indoor spaces while you arrange advice, particularly if measles is possible. Call the clinic before attending so staff can reduce contact with other patients. Rest, drink fluids and use simple fever measures that are suitable for the person’s age and health. Do not share towels, cups or eating utensils. Review the guidance on [Fever](/symptoms/fever/) and [Swollen Glands](/symptoms/swollen-glands/), and arrange a [GP Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/gp-consultation/) for an examination.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, unusual drowsiness, confusion, a seizure, severe dehydration or a rapidly worsening illness. Prompt medical advice is also appropriate for a pregnant person exposed to rubella, an infant with fever and rash, or anyone with a weakened immune system. Before travelling to a healthcare setting, mention the fever and rash so infection-control advice can be given.

Questions for your doctor

Could this rash fit measles, rubella or another infection? When might the person have become contagious? Is testing or monitoring needed, and should close contacts receive vaccination advice?

Questions people ask

Can measles and rubella look alike?

Yes. Fever and rash may occur with both, while cough and irritated eyes point more toward measles and prominent swollen glands may occur with rubella.

Should someone with a rash visit a clinic unannounced?

Call first, because the clinic may arrange a safer route that limits exposure to other patients.
