What should you know about measles roseola?

Measles often features fever with cough, runny nose, sore eyes, and a rash that begins near the face before spreading downward. Roseola commonly affects young children and may cause a high fever followed by a rash as the fever settles. These are patterns, not a diagnosis. Other viral illnesses, reactions, and skin conditions can resemble either rash.

Because measles is highly contagious, a possible case should be treated cautiously until assessed. Do not rely on the rash alone or assume that a fever settling makes every cause harmless.

Note the order and timing of fever, cough, eye symptoms, and rash. Keep the child or adult away from crowded settings and vulnerable contacts. Phone a GP Consultation service before attending and explain that measles is possible. Encourage fluids and comfort, and use fever medicine only as directed for the person's age and health.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, a seizure, confusion, severe dehydration, unusual drowsiness, or a person who is hard to wake. Prompt clinical advice is needed when fever persists, the child cannot drink, symptoms worsen, or possible measles follows an exposure. Babies and people with weakened immunity should be assessed early.

Ask which features support measles, roseola, or another illness; whether examination or testing is needed; and how long to avoid close contact. Ask about warning signs at home and whether MMR Vaccination advice is needed for household members.
