Measles on dark skin: what to know

Measles commonly begins with fever, tiredness, cough, a runny nose, or sore eyes before a spreading rash develops. On darker skin, the rash may be less visibly pink and can appear dusky, reddish-brown, violet, or as areas that feel warmer or rougher. Look in natural light at the face, hairline, neck, trunk, and limbs. Small spots inside the mouth may also occur. A rash alone cannot confirm measles; other viral illnesses can look similar.

If measles is possible, keep the person away from school, work, visitors, and people who are pregnant or have weakened immunity. Phone a GP or clinic before arriving so staff can reduce contact with others. Rest, offer frequent fluids, and use only age-appropriate symptom relief advised by a clinician or pharmacist. Do not share towels, cups, or utensils. Check vaccination records for household members and ask about MMR vaccination.

Arrange prompt medical advice for fever with a spreading rash, especially after possible exposure or travel. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, unusual sleepiness, confusion, dehydration, a seizure, severe headache, or a person who is rapidly worsening. Call ahead and mention possible measles rather than sitting in a waiting room. Fever and swollen glands may be useful details to report.
