Short answer

Measles is not limited to one age group. Babies may have protection passed from a parent for a time, but that protection changes, and young children can become vulnerable before or around routine vaccination. Older children, teenagers and adults can also develop measles if they are unvaccinated, incompletely vaccinated or have uncertain immunity.

Age is only part of the picture

Risk depends on immune protection and exposure, not age alone. A person with fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes and a spreading rash may need assessment for measles, while fever or swollen glands by themselves have many possible explanations. Infants, pregnant people and those with reduced immunity may need particularly careful advice.

Check protection

Review vaccination records with a GP or vaccination service, especially before travel, pregnancy planning or contact with a suspected case. If records are missing, ask how the history can be checked and whether catch-up vaccination is suitable. Call ahead if illness is suspected, keep the person away from crowded settings and share details of contacts and symptom timing.

When to seek care

Seek prompt advice for a new rash with fever, or after known measles exposure. Urgent care is needed for breathing difficulty, dehydration, confusion, a seizure, severe weakness or difficulty waking. Mention the person’s age, pregnancy status, immune conditions and vaccination history when contacting a service.

Yes. Adults without sufficient immunity can become infected after exposure, even if measles was mainly associated with childhood in the past.

Does a rash always mean measles?

No. Many infections and non-infectious conditions cause rashes, so fever, timing, exposure and examination all matter.
