What should you know about measles medical term?

Measles, also called rubeola, often starts with fever, cough, runny nose and irritated eyes. The rash commonly follows these early symptoms and may begin on the face before moving downwards. Swollen glands may accompany infections but are not specific to measles. Because infection can spread before the rash is recognised, a suspected case needs careful contact planning.

If measles is possible, remain away from school, work and shared waiting areas until a clinician gives advice. Call a GP consultation service first, explaining symptoms, recent contacts, travel and vaccination history. Keep fluids nearby, rest, wash hands and cover coughs. Tell the service if a baby, pregnant person or someone with reduced immunity may have been exposed.

Get urgent medical help for struggling to breathe, a seizure, confusion, marked sleepiness, inability to drink or signs of severe dehydration. Prompt assessment is also needed for fever with a new rash after exposure. Do not wait for symptoms to become severe before calling if the person has reduced immunity or is very young.

Ask how the diagnosis will be assessed, when isolation can end, and what to do about household contacts. Check whether your vaccination record is complete and whether close contacts need preventive advice.
