What should you know about measles in pregnancy symptoms?

Measles may cause fever, cough, runny nose, sore or watery eyes, tiredness, mouth spots, and a rash that begins on the face and spreads downwards. Pregnancy can change how symptoms feel, and other infections can resemble measles. A rash or fever does not establish the diagnosis by itself. Tell the maternity or primary-care team about any close contact, travel, vaccination history, and the timing of symptoms. They can judge the need for assessment and monitoring.

Phone your healthcare provider before attending in person if measles is possible. Stay away from crowded settings and vulnerable contacts while awaiting instructions. Rest, drink fluids, and monitor your temperature and general condition. Do not start a new medicine, supplement, or vaccination without advice from the pregnancy care team. If you have an antenatal appointment, explain the possible infection before entering the facility so staff can guide you safely.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, severe weakness, dehydration, fainting, a seizure, or rapidly worsening illness. Contact the maternity team promptly for reduced fetal movement when relevant, vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain, contractions, or fluid leakage. A possible measles exposure warrants timely advice even before a rash develops, particularly if vaccination status is uncertain.
