What should you know about measles cough?

Measles is a contagious viral illness affecting the airways and whole body. The cough often starts before the skin rash and may continue while the person feels unwell. Measles can also cause fever and swollen glands. A cough by itself does not identify measles; the combination of symptoms, vaccination history and possible exposure helps a clinician assess the cause.

Because measles spreads through the air, someone with a suspected infection should avoid close contact and shared waiting rooms until a clinician gives advice. Phone ahead before attending a clinic so staff can reduce exposure to other patients.

Contact a GP practice promptly if cough, fever and rash occur together, especially after contact with measles or travel to an area where it is circulating.
