Measles and mumps symptoms explained

Measles commonly begins with fever and cold-like symptoms. Red, watery eyes may appear, followed by a rash that starts on the face or hairline and spreads down the body. Mumps commonly causes painful swelling of the salivary glands at the sides of the face or under the jaw, with tiredness, headache, and reduced appetite.

These patterns overlap with other viral illnesses. A fever or swollen gland by itself does not establish measles or mumps. Recent travel, contact with an unwell person, and vaccination history can help a clinician assess the possibility.

Take your temperature, note when the rash or swelling began, and record any breathing, eye, or abdominal symptoms. Rest, drink fluids, and use only medicines suitable for you, following professional advice. Avoid school, work, and close contact while infection is being assessed.

Phone a GP service before going in if measles or mumps is possible. This helps the service reduce exposure for other patients and arrange the right assessment.

Contact a healthcare professional the same day for fever with a new rash, facial swelling, or known exposure. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, confusion, severe headache, stiff neck, a seizure, inability to drink, or severe pain or swelling in the testicles or abdomen.

Ask whether your symptoms fit measles, mumps, or another illness; whether you need testing; how long to avoid others; and whether household contacts need specific advice.
