Measles and diarrhoea

Measles may involve symptoms beyond its rash, including fever, cough, sore eyes and reduced appetite. Diarrhoea can happen alongside the infection, but it is not specific enough to confirm measles. Other infections, food-related illness or medicines may also be responsible.

Watch for dry mouth, few wet nappies or trips to the toilet, dark urine, dizziness, unusual sleepiness and inability to keep fluids down. Infants, older adults and people with other illnesses can become dehydrated more quickly.

Give frequent small sips of fluid; an oral rehydration solution may help when losses continue. Continue breastfeeds and offer simple foods when wanted. Avoid anti-diarrhoeal medicine in children unless a clinician advises it. Wash hands carefully and avoid preparing food for others while ill.

If measles is suspected, phone a GP Consultation before attending. Tell the service about the rash, fever, diarrhoea, vaccination history and any known contact.

Seek urgent help for severe dehydration, blood in stool, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, breathing difficulty, confusion, seizure, collapse or difficulty waking. Contact a clinician promptly if diarrhoea continues, drinking falls, fever returns, or the person is worsening.

Ask how much fluid is suitable, whether an oral rehydration product is appropriate, which medicines to avoid, whether testing is needed, and how long to stay away from school or work. Mention urine output and any recent antibiotics.
