Measles after effects: what to know

Recovery may be gradual. A lingering cough, low energy, sore eyes or reduced appetite can occur as the body settles after the infection. Diarrhoea or ear symptoms can also appear during illness or recovery. Measles can occasionally affect the lungs, ears or brain, so a new or worsening symptom matters more than the fact that a rash has faded.

A fever returning after improvement, difficulty breathing, unusual sleepiness, confusion, a seizure, or trouble hearing is not something to watch without advice. Measles is contagious; phone a clinic before attending so staff can reduce exposure to others.

Offer frequent fluids and small nourishing meals, allow rest, and keep a simple record of temperature, breathing, drinking and urine. Use medicines only as directed for the person’s age and health; do not give aspirin to children. Keep the person away from vulnerable contacts until a clinician confirms it is appropriate to mix with others.

Arrange a GP Consultation if symptoms are not easing, the person has another medical condition, or you are unsure whether the illness was measles. A clinician can review the history and examination and decide whether testing or follow-up is needed.

Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, severe dehydration, a seizure, confusion, collapse, marked drowsiness, or a severe headache with neck stiffness. Prompt advice is also sensible for a returning fever, persistent vomiting, worsening cough, eye pain or reduced hearing.

Ask which symptoms fit normal recovery, how long isolation should continue, whether a review is needed, and which warning signs should trigger emergency care. Mention vaccination history, pregnancy in the household, immune problems, and any medicines being taken.
