Measles and mumps: what the terms mean

Measles commonly begins with fever and cold-like symptoms before a rash spreads from the face or hairline downwards. Mumps more often causes painful swelling near the cheeks or jaw because the salivary glands are affected. Both illnesses can cause fever and feeling unwell, so symptoms may overlap and cannot identify the infection by themselves.
