What should you know about meaning of spotting after period?

Spotting means light bleeding outside the expected menstrual flow. It may occur around ovulation, after starting or missing hormonal contraception, after sex, or with irritation of the cervix. Infection such as chlamydia can cause bleeding between periods, sometimes with discharge, pelvic pain or pain during sex. Endometrial polyps and uterine fibroids can also cause irregular bleeding. Cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer may present with abnormal bleeding, while womb cancer is another condition clinicians may need to exclude, especially when bleeding is new, recurrent or occurring after menopause. A symptom does not identify its cause by itself.

Track the date, colour, amount, triggers and associated symptoms. Note contraception, pregnancy possibility, medicines and whether bleeding follows sex. Arrange a medical review if spotting repeats, lasts, follows sex, occurs with pain or discharge, or is unexpected for you. Assessment may include a pregnancy test, examination, infection testing, cervical screening review or imaging, depending on your situation. Do not use leftover antibiotics or delay care because the bleeding is light.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, fever, weakness or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding. Contact a clinician promptly for bleeding after menopause, bleeding after sex that keeps recurring, or symptoms such as foul-smelling discharge and pelvic pain. Emergency assessment is needed for collapse or rapidly worsening pain.

Ask what causes fit your age, cycle and medicines, whether you need pregnancy or infection testing, when cervical screening is due, and whether examination or ultrasound is appropriate. Ask which changes should trigger urgent review.
