What should you know about an MD Anderson virtual second opinion?

Short answer

An MD Anderson virtual second opinion lets specialists review available medical records remotely and discuss possible next steps.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Format
Remote review of supplied records, with a specialist discussion
May still be needed
An examination, further tests, or local urgent care

What the virtual review means

A remote review may examine pathology reports or digital pathology images, radiology scans, blood results, treatment history, and your current recommendation. The specialist can explain the diagnosis, stage, treatment sequence, and questions that remain open. The consultation is based on the records supplied, so an in-person examination or additional tests may still be needed.

A virtual opinion can be useful when travel is difficult or when you want another specialist perspective before making a major decision. It does not replace urgent assessment or the clinician who knows your day-to-day condition.

Preparing for a remote consultation

Request complete reports and image files from your hospital, including pathology material when a review is requested. Prepare a concise medication list, allergies, previous procedures, other medical conditions, and a timeline of symptoms and treatment. Check that the consultation platform works and that you can join from a private place with a reliable connection.

Send focused questions in advance: Is the diagnosis clear? Is the stage complete? What options are reasonable? What is the purpose and timing of each treatment? If surgery is discussed, ask about tumour removal surgery, recovery, and how other treatments fit around it.

When remote advice is not enough

Seek urgent local medical care for severe breathlessness, new weakness, sudden confusion, heavy bleeding, or rapidly worsening pain. During treatment, report fever, repeated vomiting, or a sudden decline to your treating team rather than waiting for a scheduled virtual review. A remote consultation cannot safely manage an emergency that needs examination, monitoring, or immediate treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Which records and images should be sent? Could missing tissue or scan information affect the opinion? What findings would require an in-person visit? How will recommendations be shared with my local team? If opinions differ, who can help me compare them?

Questions people ask

Can a virtual second opinion review pathology?

It may review pathology reports and suitable digital tissue images; the specialist will explain if original material or another laboratory review is needed.

Can the virtual specialist prescribe treatment locally?

The reviewing specialist can discuss options, while prescribing and arranging care generally require coordination with the clinician responsible for treatment in your location.
