MCL sprain tear: what should you know?

Short answer
An MCL sprain tear is damage to the inner-knee ligament that can affect stability, pain, swelling, and confidence with movement.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What an MCL tear involves
The medial collateral ligament helps stop the knee from opening toward the inside when a sideways force acts on it. A tear may involve a small portion of fibres or the full width of the ligament. People may notice inner-knee tenderness, bruising, swelling, pain with side-to-side stress, or a sense that the joint is unstable. A suspected tear can occur with injuries to other ligaments, cartilage, or bone, so the mechanism and examination matter more than the label alone.
Protecting the knee
Avoid pivoting, running, and contact until the knee has been assessed. Walk with support if needed and keep the joint in a comfortable range rather than forcing it straight or deeply bent. Cold therapy wrapped in cloth may ease symptoms, and elevation can be comfortable when resting. Rehabilitation usually progresses from safe movement to strength, balance, and activity-specific control. Physiotherapy can structure that progression; Splinting or Kinesiology Taping may be options for selected situations.
When to get help
Arrange prompt assessment if the knee feels unstable, you cannot bear weight, or swelling and pain are substantial. Seek urgent help after major trauma if there is deformity, severe worsening pain, or a foot that is cold, pale, or numb. Follow-up is useful when walking remains difficult, the knee cannot regain motion, or symptoms fail to improve as expected.
Questions for your appointment
Ask whether the tear appears partial or complete, whether another structure may be injured, and what support is suitable. Ask when to start rehabilitation, which exercises are safe, how progress will be checked, and when a return to work or sport can be considered.

Questions people ask
Does an MCL tear always require an operation?
No. The treatment plan depends on the tear, knee stability, associated injuries, and functional progress.
Can I walk with an MCL tear?
Some people can walk with support, while others need reduced loading. Let pain, stability, and a clinician's advice guide you.
