MCL sprain bruise: what should you know?

Short answer
An MCL sprain can cause bruising over the inner knee, alongside tenderness, swelling, and difficulty with movement.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical area
- The inner side of the knee
- Possible skin change
- Purple, blue, or yellow bruising
- Early priority
- Protect the knee and limit painful loading
What the bruise may mean
The medial collateral ligament runs along the inside of the knee and helps resist forces that push the knee inward. A twist, awkward landing, or blow to the outer knee can stretch this ligament. Small injured blood vessels may leak into nearby tissue, creating purple, blue, or yellow skin changes. Bruising can spread slightly as blood moves through the soft tissues; its appearance alone cannot show how severe the ligament injury is.
What you can do
Reduce activities that trigger pain and use comfortable support while walking. A cold pack wrapped in cloth may ease discomfort for short periods; do not place ice directly on skin. Rest the leg in a raised position when practical, and avoid forceful stretching or massage over fresh bruising. A clinician or physiotherapist can guide gradual movement, strengthening, and a return to sport. Physiotherapy may be useful once the knee can move safely, while Splinting may be considered when extra support is needed.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt assessment if you cannot bear weight, the knee gives way, swelling becomes marked, or pain is severe after the injury. Seek urgent help for a visibly deformed knee, numb or cold foot, or an open wound. Bruising that keeps expanding, symptoms after a significant impact, or limited improvement should also be checked to assess for associated injuries.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the inner-knee tenderness fits an MCL sprain, whether another knee structure needs examination, and which movements are safe now. You can also ask when to begin strengthening, whether Kinesiology Taping is suitable for your activity, and what signs should prompt a follow-up visit.

Questions people ask
Does bruising prove that the MCL is torn?
No. Bruising can occur with different soft-tissue injuries, so an examination is needed to judge the ligament and other knee structures.
Can I massage a fresh bruise?
Avoid forceful massage over a new bruise because it may increase discomfort. Use gentle, comfortable movement and seek tailored advice.
