What should you know about MCL injuries in football?

Short answer
An MCL injury in football is a stretch or tear of the inner knee ligament, often causing local pain, swelling and reduced confidence when changing direction.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Sporting trigger
- Outside contact or a planted-foot turn
- Return focus
- Strength, balance and controlled direction changes
How football can injure the MCL
The MCL resists forces that push the knee inward. A tackle from the outside, a planted foot during a turn, or an awkward landing can strain it. Pain is usually felt along the inner knee, with tenderness, swelling or difficulty sprinting, cutting and defending. A sports clinician checks ligament stability and also considers meniscus, cartilage and cruciate-ligament injury. The apparent ability to walk does not by itself show that the knee is ready for football.
What to do after the injury
Leave the pitch and avoid testing the knee with tackles, pivots or sprints. Protect the leg, use cold treatment if comfortable, and keep movement gentle rather than forcing a painful bend. [Knee Bracing](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/knee-bracing/) may support selected injuries. [Physiotherapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/physiotherapy/) can build motion, strength and balance in stages. A [Return-to-Sport Programme](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/return-to-sport-programme/) can then progress from straight-line work to controlled changes of direction and football drills.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt assessment when the knee swells after contact, feels unstable, or prevents normal walking. Seek urgent help for a deformed knee, inability to bear weight, severe rapidly increasing pain, new numbness or weakness, or a foot that is cold or pale. Do not return to play simply because bruising has faded; strength and control also need to recover.
Questions for your doctor
What grade and location of MCL injury do I have? Are other knee structures involved? Can I train around the injury, and which exercises are suitable now? What functional tests should I pass before contact practice and a match?

Questions people ask
Can I keep playing with an MCL injury?
Continuing football can aggravate the ligament or hide another injury. Stop match play and obtain an assessment before returning to contact activity.
Is a brace always needed?
No. Support depends on the injury grade, stability, comfort and rehabilitation plan set by a clinician.
