What should you know about MBP immunohistochemistry?

MBP stands for myelin basic protein, a protein associated with myelin, the insulating material around many nerve fibres. In immunohistochemistry, a prepared tissue section is treated with an antibody designed to bind to the target. A visible signal then helps the pathologist see where the target is present and how it is distributed. The result is interpreted alongside the tissue’s shape, other stains, clinical history and imaging. A positive or negative stain is not, by itself, a complete diagnosis or a measure of how a person will feel.

If MBP staining appears in a report, ask why it was requested and what tissue was tested. The report may describe staining intensity, location, pattern or whether the result was limited by the sample. Some specimens need additional stains or expert review because tissue handling, background signal and the amount of material can affect interpretation. Your clinician can explain how the finding fits the full pathology diagnosis. Do not interpret a single marker without the final report and the clinical context.

The laboratory stain itself does not usually create symptoms that require urgent care. Contact the clinical team if you have worsening symptoms related to the condition being investigated, or if a biopsy site becomes increasingly painful, red, swollen or draining. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, breathing difficulty, fainting, new weakness, or sudden confusion. These symptoms need assessment regardless of the MBP result.

Ask what the MBP stain was intended to answer, whether the result is positive, negative or indeterminate, which other markers were used, and whether the sample is adequate. Ask how the finding changes the overall diagnosis and whether a pathology review or further biopsy is needed.
