What should you know about maternity glucose tolerance test?

The test usually starts with a blood sample, followed by a measured glucose drink and further blood samples after set intervals. Your maternity team will tell you whether fasting is required, when to stop eating and drinking, and which medicines to discuss beforehand. The test examines glucose processing rather than symptoms, because gestational diabetes may not cause noticeable changes. A result outside the expected range does not define your health on its own; your clinician explains what it means and whether another assessment is needed.

Follow the appointment instructions carefully. Bring water if your clinic permits it, wear comfortable clothing and allow enough time to remain at the facility between samples. Tell the team if you feel faint, vomit the drink, or cannot complete the test. Do not change your usual diet or stop prescribed medicine unless your maternity clinician specifically instructs you. Results may lead to advice about meals, activity, glucose monitoring and follow-up during pregnancy.

Contact your maternity team promptly if you cannot keep the glucose drink down, feel very unwell, or have marked thirst, frequent urination, weakness or blurred vision. Seek urgent help for fainting, severe confusion, breathing difficulty or other rapidly worsening symptoms. A test appointment should not delay care for an acute pregnancy concern such as heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain or reduced fetal movement.

Ask whether fasting is needed, how long the appointment will take, which medicines and supplements to mention, when results will be available, and what follow-up happens if the result suggests gestational diabetes.
