What should you know about maternal syphilis?

Syphilis can pass from a pregnant person to the developing baby, sometimes without obvious symptoms in the mother. Screening uses blood tests, and a positive result usually needs confirmation and assessment of the infection stage. The clinical team considers timing, previous treatment and partner testing. Untreated infection can affect pregnancy and the newborn, but finding it gives the care team an opportunity to treat and monitor both patients.

Attend STI screening or maternity appointments promptly and tell the clinician about any previous diagnosis or treatment. Take the recommended antibiotic treatment as prescribed and complete follow-up blood tests. Partners may need assessment and treatment to prevent reinfection. Use condoms until the clinical team explains when sex is safe, and do not self-treat with leftover antibiotics.

Arrange prompt medical review after a positive screening result, a new genital sore or rash, or a known exposure. Seek urgent maternity advice for reduced fetal movement, contractions, fluid loss, bleeding or severe illness. A newborn exposed during pregnancy should be assessed according to the paediatric team’s plan.
