What should you know about mastocytosis flow cytometry?

Mastocytosis involves an abnormal accumulation of mast cells in tissues. Flow cytometry places cells in a fluid stream and uses labelled antibodies to detect proteins on their surface or inside them. The pattern can help distinguish mast cells from other blood or marrow cells and can show whether their marker pattern is unusual. The test is interpreted with symptoms, examination, blood tests, tissue findings and sometimes molecular testing; a flow result alone does not establish every form of mastocytosis. A bone marrow biopsy may be used when the team needs to examine marrow architecture and collect cells for several tests.

Ask which sample is planned, why it is needed and when results are expected. Tell the team about medicines, previous reactions to procedures and episodes of flushing, itching, faintness, wheezing or abdominal symptoms. If a bone marrow sample is taken, follow the dressing and activity instructions and keep the site clean. Write down symptoms, possible triggers and their timing; this gives the specialist context for laboratory findings. Treatment decisions may require more than one result, so ask how the flow pattern fits the complete assessment.

After blood collection or a marrow procedure, seek advice for persistent bleeding, increasing redness, drainage, fever or worsening pain at the site. Mast-cell mediator release can cause sudden flushing, widespread hives, throat tightness, wheezing, dizziness, fainting, vomiting or severe abdominal cramping. These symptoms can signal a serious allergic-type reaction: use your emergency plan if one has been prescribed and seek emergency care immediately for breathing difficulty, collapse or throat swelling.
