What should you know about mask sunburn?

Sunburn commonly causes warmth, redness, tenderness, and later peeling. A close-fitting mask can trap heat and perspiration, while its edges may rub already inflamed skin. The covered area is not automatically protected from ultraviolet exposure, especially when the fabric is thin, loose, or shifted. Move into shade, cool the skin with a clean damp cloth, and drink fluids. Wash gently, then apply a bland moisturiser or [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) product while the skin is slightly damp. Avoid peeling loose skin, ice directly on the area, fragranced products, exfoliation, and further sun exposure. Use a clean, soft, well-fitting mask and replace it if damp. Do not apply a prescription steroid without clinical advice; [Topical Corticosteroids](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-corticosteroids/) are not suitable for every facial rash.

Seek medical care for extensive blistering, severe swelling, worsening pain, fever, vomiting, confusion, faintness, or signs of infection such as spreading redness or pus. Urgent assessment is appropriate if the eyes are involved or vision changes.
